Rishard Matthews had a successful run with the Tennessee Titans during the 2016 and 2017 seasons, but the 2018 season got off to a rocky start. For whatever reason, things have not gone well between the two parties, which led to Matthews requesting his release from the Titans.

Now, the Titans are planning to honor that request, according to the team.

Just last season, Matthews was one of the most consistent performers for the Titans' offense. He caught 53 passes for 795 yards and four touchdowns. Back in 2016, he caught 65 passes for 945 yards and four touchdowns.

Through the first three weeks of this season, however, Matthews has been an absolute non-factor. He has just three receptions for 11 yards. Obviously, that role was not going to cut it for him.

Matthews opened up a bit about his request to be released to A to Z Sports in a text message:

“EVERYTHING IS GOOD! JUST WASN'T HAPPY WITH WHAT WAS GOING ON BARELY GETTING ANY PLAYING TIME. IT WAS TIME TO MOVE ON. I've been the leading receiver [on the Titans] for two years. Then all of a sudden I'm barely playing and not even starting. Using my injury as the scapegoat. Look at number of snaps and targets.”

It won't take long for Matthews to find work elsewhere. There are plenty of teams around the league that could use some help at the wide receiver position.

Tennessee appears just fine with moving on from Matthews. They have second-year wide receiver Corey Davis as their lead receiver now. Matthews' talent cannot be taken away from him, but the Titans did not feel like he was an integral part of their offense.

Expect to hear more news about Matthews in the near future as he searches for another opportunity for more playing time and a bigger role.
