Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel says there is a possibility that cornerback Malcolm Butler could be out for the rest of the season after suffering a broken wrist during his team's loss to the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, according to Jim Wyatt of the Titans' team website.

Butler may have to undergo surgery to repair the issue.

He suffered the injury late in the first half of the Titans' Week 9 loss and did not return.

On the season overall, Butler has logged 32 tackles, a couple of interceptions, nine passes defended and a defensive touchdown.

The 29-year-old, who played his collegiate football at West Alabama, went undrafted but eventually landed with the New England Patriots in 2014.

He played scarcely during his rookie campaign, appearing in 11 games in a reserve role, but the following year, Butler played in all 16 contests and registered 67 tackles, a pair of picks and 15 passes defended en route to the Pro Bowl.

Butler went on to spend the first four years of his career with the Patriots, posting mostly positive results. However, he is most remembered for being benched for New England's Super Bowl loss against the Philadelphia Eagles in February 2018, a decision that many feel cost Bill Belichick another championship, as the Patriots' secondary struggled throughout the defeat.

That ensuing offseason, Butler went on to sign with the Titans. He participated in every game during his first year with the club, posting 69 tackles, a sack, three interceptions, 12 passes defended and a defensive touchdown.

Tennessee is now 4-5 this season.
