The Tennessee Titans made the decision Thursday morning to release running back Dion Lewis, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

The move comes during a wave of news surrounding the Coronavirus pandemic, which has grounded the coaching and scouting personnel of multiple NFL franchises and has had other announce that they will not be attending college pro days. As of now, the league has said that it has no plans to move the start of the 2020 season, which officially kicks off Wednesday.

The Titans are hoping that their 2020 year looks a lot like their 2019 campaign. Lewis appeared in all 16 games last season for the franchise, carrying the ball 54 times for 209 yards. But where he has primarily excelled throughout his career has been as a pass-catcher out of the backfield, as he accrued 25 receptions for 164 yards, while also notching his only touchdown of the season.

Lewis was integral to Tennessee as a change of pace running back behind Derrick Henry, who exploded into superstardom as the year progressed.

The past two seasons have seen Lewis serve as Henry’s backup without missing one regular-season game. He spent the three previous years as a back with the New England Patriots, which spurred him into the four-year deal that the Titans just dropped anchor on with two years to go.

At age 29, Lewis will join a crowded free-agent class. Henry is also set to become a free agent, but Tennessee could always place the franchise tag on his shoulders. For now, the Titans’ running back situation remains in flux, much like many other things around the league.
