We are quickly approaching one of the best times of the year — fantasy football season. Projections and mock drafts have been done and now leagues will begin to renew and plan their draft days.  The tight end position is extremely top-heavy, but there are still strong options after the top three.

Tight ends are an important fantasy position because you are allowed just one in most formats. It is important to hit at the position but how early is too early to draft one?

Here are the top 10 fantasy football tight ends headed into the 2020 season.

10. Evan Engram, New York Giants

Engram is entering his fourth year in the league. As a rookie, he put up solid numbers in 15 games but injuries have stopped him from taking the next step as a fantasy player. Engram missed five games in 2018 and eight last season. When on the field, the Giants like to target their tight end. Engram saw five or more targets in all eight games last season and hit double-digits twice. This is the reason he finds himself in the top 10 and he could be higher if he is healthy for a full campaign.

9. Hunter Henry, Los Angeles Chargers

Henry entered the league splitting time with Antonio Gates but emerged as a red-zone threat. He scored eight touchdowns as a rookie. Henry missed the 2018 season with an injury but he returned to play 12 games in 2019. Henry put up 652 yards and five touchdowns last season. Like Engram, durability is a concern for Henry. He will also lose the luxury of Philip Rivers under center but he is a difference-maker when healthy. It's also worth noting that Henry is in a contract year. He signed his franchise tender that will pay him $10.6 million in 2020.

8. Rob Gronkowski, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Gronkowski is back in the NFL and will return in Tampa Bay where Tom Brady will once again be his quarterback. Gronk was the tight end selection on the NFL's 2010's All-Decade team. He completely revolutionized the tight end position scoring 79 touchdowns in nine years but injuries were a big problem. Gronkowski missed 13 games during his last three years in the league. As a new member of the Bucs, Gronk has a chance to flourish in Bruce Arians' offense with a familiar face under center. He will be the team's No. 1 tight end which could allow him to put up near 750 yards and seven or eight touchdowns.

7. Jared Cook, New Orleans Saints

Cook has finished in the top-seven among tight ends in each of the last two seasons, and he has done it with two different teams. He finished second among tight ends with nine touchdowns in 2019. The New Orleans Saints do not have a tight end that will take snaps away from Cook. Their receiving corps is strong but Cook will still act as a primary target. This makes him a TE1 in many fantasy football formats.

6. Tyler Higbee, Los Angeles Rams

Higbee is a surprise addition near the top-five. In his first three professional seasons, he finished with 60 catches. In 2019 alone, Higbee totaled 69 catches for 734 yards and three touchdowns. He got hot late finishing with four 100 yard games in the last five. Higbee finished with seven or more catches in all five games, including a 12 catch game. There is still more that needs to be seen from Higbee, but he is worth a starting spot for 2020.

5. Darren Waller, Las Vegas Raiders

Waller was drafted in the sixth round of the 2015 NFL Draft as a wide receiver. He barely saw the field and totaled 18 catches over his first three seasons. In 2019, Waller had an incredible breakout season. The 6'6 tight end finished with 90 catches for 1,145 yards and three touchdowns. Waller finished third in points among the position last season. He will enter the season as Derek Carr's main target which means his usage will not decrease and he has a chance to add more scores. Waller is a clear top-five tight end.

4. Mark Andrews, Baltimore Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens featured one of the top offenses in the game in 2019 and their tight end was a main factor. Andrews handled a 25% target share for the Ravens' offense during their 14-2 season. In two years, Andrews is averaging 14.3 yards per reception and 9.5 yards per target. Andrews led all tight ends with 10 touchdowns last season. His 11 end zone targets were also first among tight ends and eighth in the league.

3. Zach Ertz, Philadelphia Eagles

Ertz powered through double-coverage in 2019 for 88 catches, 916 yards, and six touchdowns. He earned his third straight top-four finish among tight ends. Ertz will enter the 2020 season as Carson Wentz's favorite target and arguably the most important piece of the Philadelphia Eagle offense. He is a catch machine. Ertz set the all-time record for catches by a tight end in a single-season with 116 in 2018. His 88 catches last season were the third most in Eagles' history.

2. George Kittle, San Francisco 49ers

Kittle will have the luxury of entering the season with a shiny, new five-year, $75 million contract extension. He is worth every penny as he put up 85 catches for 1,053 yards and five touchdowns in 2019. He was not a factor during the Super Bowl run, but the San Francisco 49ers committed to the run game. In 2020, Kittle is an early-round pick, either the second or third. At 26 years old, Kittle will be dominant for quite some time.

1. Travis Kelce, Kansas City Chiefs

There has been some talk on who the best tight end in football is. This should not be a question and is definitely not a debate in fantasy football. Kelce is looking to finish as the top tight end in fantasy for the fifth straight season in 2020. In 2019, Kelce put up his fourth straight season of at least 80 catches and 1,000 yards. He has scored 27 touchdowns during that stretch. Kelce signed a four-year, $57 million extension with the Kansas City Chiefs recently. This means he will continue to be a top tight end with Patrick Mahomes throwing him the ball. He has been targeted at least 100 times in each of the last five years. Kelce is an early second-round pick this season.
