Team SoloMid's president Leena “Leena” Xu calls out Golden Guardians for mishandling their organization in the LOL Championship Series (LCS).

LEENA SAYS GOLDEN GUARDIANS IS NOT RUNNING THE ORG WELL

Leena's comments came during a live stream with League of Legends (LOL) veteran player Yiliang Peter “Doublelift” Peng on Twitch. During the live stream, a commenter asked Doublelift why he thinks Golden Guardians is still in the LCS. As added context, the Golden Guardians currently stands last in the current season, where TSM are the current champions. Leena happily obliged the live stream with her own opinions.

“Basically what happened a couple of years ago was gaming as a whole was growing, so people wanted to invest into gaming entities like the LCS,” says Leena. “So Golden Guardians threw a lot of money and bought an LCS team.”

The NBA team Golden State Warriors bought into the esports scene with the Golden Guardians in 2017. Since then, the team has never won a single championship. The team's social media accounts also have very small followings compared to their peers.

Leena checked her tone. However, she then continued on: “I don’t want to be mean, but I don’t think they’re running it very well. They want fans, they’re just not doing much to get them.”

Doublelift then jokingly said that her comments were “a nice way to say they suck.” But Leena responded that there are different ways of building a fanbase. This includes simply winning games, something that the Golden Guardians have been struggling to do. She also pointed at 100 Thieves, a popular team known for its eclectic branding, for their unique way of marketing themselves.

With such an expensive buy-in into the LCS, many might consider the Golden Guardians to be a failed investment. Starting to win matches may just introduce the turning point the team needs to succeed as a brand.
