The Minnesota Twins joined a number of teams looking to improve their bullpen at the trade deadline, acquiring Sam Dyson from the San Francisco Giants:

Minnesota also added veteran right-hander Sergio Romo on Friday, giving them a pair of impact relievers to help a unit that has struggled this season.

Twins relievers have posted a cumulative fWAR of 3.2 this season, which ranks 16th in baseball. However, they rank 22nd in the league in ERA.

Meanwhile, Dyson has been one of the most impressive relievers in the game. In 51 innings of work, Dyson boasts a 2.47 ERA, and he has 17 holds on the season. His peripherals are equally impressive, with a 2.74 FIP and 8.3 K/9 paired with just a 1.2 BB/9 rate.

There was plenty of discussion about whether or not the Twins would make a move for a marquee starter such as Madison Bumgarner, especially given Jake Odorizzi's struggles since the All-Star break. However, Minnesota has elected to go after bullpen arms that can help them at the end of games.

Indeed, both Romo and Dyson could see action as the closer in Minnesota, as both have experience in the eighth and ninth innings.

While the Twins still hold a narrow lead in the American League Central, the Cleveland Indians are breathing down their neck, and are just three games back entering play on Wednesday.

Additionally, the Indians added some serious production to their lineup by trading for sluggers Franmil Reyes and Yasiel Puig as part of the Trevor Bauer deal.

Minnesota has responded in turn, acquiring a pair of arms with late-game pedigree.
