The Minnesota Twins have discussed trading for right-handing starting pitcher Noah Syndergaard with the New York Mets, according to La Velle E. Neal III of The Minneapolis Star Tribune.

The Mets seem to be coveting shortstop Royce Lewis and outfielder Alex Kirilloff, the Twins' top two prospects, in a potential return.

New York recently put Syndergaard on the market, and while the Mets do seem to be serious about fielding offers for the hurler, Jon Heyman of MLB Network says New York would have to be “blown away” in order to move him.

Syndergaard is not exactly having his best season. He has made 20 starts, going 7-5 with a 4.33 ERA while allowing 124 hits and striking out 126 batters over 126.2 innings of work. While his 3.63 FIP indicates he has gotten a bit unlucky, that is still the lowest FIP of his career and is well below his lifetime average of 2.85.

The 26-year-old was originally selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the first round (30th pick overall) of the 2010 MLB Draft, but never actually pitched for the Blue Jays before being traded to the Mets in a deal for R.A. Dickey back in December 2012.

Syndergaard went on to make his big-league debut in 2015, going 9-7 with a 3.24 ERA while surrendering 126 hits and fanning 166 hitters across 150 frames of action.

He then made his first and only All-Star team the following year, posting a record of 14-9 with a 2.60 ERA.

However, since then, injuries have been a problem for Syndergaard, as he made just seven starts in 2017 and totaled only 154.1 innings in 2018. As a result, rival teams may be a bit reluctant to match the haul the Mets are requiring.
