UFC veteran referee Herb Dean took center stage again on Saturday after another controversial stoppage during UFC Vegas 42. Dean had yet another questionable moment in the ring after his late stoppage on Saturday's co-main event between heavyweights Ben Rothwell and Marcos Rogerio de Lima. Unsurprisingly, Dana White was not happy about these developments and the outspoken franchise owner did not hold back with his criticism of Dean.

Before anything else, let's put things into context. Here is the controversial moment wherein Herb Dean questioned his own decision-making right when it mattered most:

De Lima hit Rothwell with a right hand that clearly rocked the 40-year-old American. Rothwell looked like he had already lost his legs at that point. Naturally, De Lima went in for the kill as he bombarded Rothwell with a vicious combination of punches. Once again, Rothwell's legs wobbled and it appeared like he was about to go down. It was at this point that Herb Dean interfered by putting his hands around De Lima's hips.

Rothwell somehow managed to hold on to dear life by clinging onto De Lima's lower body. At that point, however, it was clear that Rothwell no longer had the capacity to carry on with the fight. Well, Herb Dean thought otherwise. It wasn't until Rothwell was on the ground, with De Lima all over him, that the referee mercifully decided to stop the fight. It is also worth noting that Dean didn't make his decision until De Lima called him over. It's as if it was De Lima himself who had to tell Dean that the fight had to be called off.

Dana White is never one to mince words and he absolutely lashed out on Dean in the post-match press conference. White did not dance around the subject as he said straight up that Herb Dean has to do a better job:

“Herb needs to stop touching guys unless the fight is over,” White said, via Christopher Taylor of BJPenn.com. “You know what I mean? He goes in and grabs him by the waist and then decides oops maybe I… The good thing about this one was that fight should have been stopped when he stopped it. You know, you didn’t see Ben jumping up and arguing about it. That fight should have been stopped.”

Dana White pretty much just said out loud what we were all thinking. Herb Dean is an experienced referee and he's been around the game for quite some time now. He, of all people, should know when to stop a fight. His failure to do so literally puts fighters' lives at risk.

The UFC owner did not stop there. White then went even further by saying that Dean looked like he was dancing around during the most crucial moment of the fight:

“(Herb Dean) has to pull the trigger and stop touching guys,” White continued. “Don’t touch them unless you’re going to stop the fight. And when they played it back in slow motion he was kind of like dancing. He doesn’t know what to do whether he is going to jump in or not jump in.”

This definitely isn't the first time Herb Dean was involved in a similar controversy. He's been criticized for his refereeing many times in the past and at this point, it is clear that even Dana White, who himself has given the veteran ref as long a leash as one can hand out, is getting fed up by Dean's indecisiveness.
