It's possible that the 2021 US Open men's singles tournament will come down to a battle between Daniil Medvedev of Russia and Novak Djokovic of Serbia. Medvedev passed his test in the quarterfinals by taking care of business against Botic van de Zandschulp in four sets, while Djokovic will be meeting Matteo Berrettini in the same round Wednesday evening.

Asked about a potential meeting with Djokovic in the US Open finals, Medvedev did not waste time expressing his true thoughts about it, per the ATP Tour's official website.

“I don't think about him, because as we saw, anybody can beat anybody. If he's in the final, and if I'm there, I'm happy. He's also happy, I guess,” Medvedev said. “I’m not going to root or cheer for somebody. I'm just going to enjoy the tennis and then prepare for the winner. It's the same every match.”

Ranked second overall in the world, Medvedev is still in search of his first Grand Slam title. The closest he's gone to bagging a Slam championship was back in the 2021 Australian Open, where he reached the finals only to fall prey to… you guessed it — Djokovic. Medvedev also reached the last round of the 2019 US Open but could not get past Rafael Nadal.

It's clear that Medvedev is a man on a mission in the US Open, and he is right in saying that no one is absolutely safe in this sport. That certainly applies to his perspective of Djokovic. After all, he's beaten the current No. 1 player three times in five ATP matches.
