Valve has canceled the Dota 2 Winter Major, the first Major for the Dota Pro Circuit 2021-2022.

The news came not as a surprise, but as a massive disappointment both for fans and pro players alike. Valve's announcement was met with heavy criticism, especially because many felt that Valve does not give enough effort to its pro circuit.

Alongside Valve's announcement of the Winter Major, the Dota 2 developers shared the plans for the Winter Circuit results. “Since the first Major is no longer happening,” the announcement reads, “we have decided to redistribute its points to the second and third Major.”

Major 2:
1st Place – 680 Points
2nd Place – 610 Points
3rd Place – 530 Points
4th Place – 460 Points
5th/6th Place – 385 Points
7th/8th Place – 240 Points

Major 3:
1st Place – 820 Points
2nd Place – 740 Points
3rd Place – 670 Points
4th Place – 590 Points
5th/6th Place – 515 Points
7th/8th Place – 360 Points

However, noticeably missing from this redistribution is the lack of cash prizes. Heavy criticisms were thrown towards this, with many calling out Valve for not caring enough for their Tier 1 pro players, teams, and talents. Without a prize pool distribution, teams and players will have nothing to show for their Winter Season performance. Players who have relocated during the off-season just to play in a more competitive environment will be left with red digits on their ledgers without a Major to get any prize money from.

Many have also claimed that this lack of regard by Valve is what makes it hard for tier-one teams like Quincy Crew to find suitable sponsors. Without a stable circuit with ensured paychecks, getting into the Dota 2 industry is a very risky investment.
