The video game industry is overflowing with titles based on several wars across history. Subsequently, when developers ran out of real wars to adapt, they moved onto future wars and ones set in space. In 2015, one humble game developer sought to deliver a completely unique digital war experience. Now, after two modestly successful war games, they return for a third time. The developers behind Verdun and Tannenberg officially announced their next upcoming game, Isonzo.

WORLD WAR ISONZO

Isonzo focuses on the conflict between the Kingdom of Italy and the Austro-Hungarian Empire during the Great War. The game developers remain true to their specific brand of war games. Players can expect accurate weapons, uniforms, and trench layouts for a more immersive experience.  Additionally, Jos Hoebe, the game's Creative Director, explained just how much the game will differ from the company's previous titles.

“The harsh, rocky Alpine landscape meant we had to dramatically improve how the players move through the landscape, with systems like IK (inverse kinematics) and vaulting in place to ensure a smooth and good-looking experience. These improvements have led to gunplay also being updated to be way smoother using a dynamic IK system in first person. Movement and recoil are now more fluid and weapons in hand interact with the environment.”

The game developers hope to deliver a different brand of war games as opposed to the numerous other franchises in the space. Above all, the team's goal for Isonzo was to allow players to actively change the flow of each battle through their actions. Hoebe and his team promise a more cinematic and diverse gameplay compared to the earlier games from their studio.

It's definitely refreshing for skilled developers looking to shake up derivative game genres. Isonzo hasn't released yet but hopefully, it will live up to all the expectations the developers levied upon it. Expect Isonzo to drop for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S sometime in 2021.
