A stubborn rim, a ladder, and two bewildered NBA teams all conspire to create perhaps one of the weirdest moments in the league so far this season at Air Canada Centre Friday. The action between the Brooklyn Nets and the Toronto Raptors had to be put on hold during one extended moment in the game after officials deemed it necessary to check whether one of the baskets adhere to the league’s standards.

Here’s the video of that bizarre occurrence which probably no one from the crowd expected they would see.

The sight of a utility man walking into the court carrying a ladder was odd for everyone in attendance, considering that any equipment checks should be done prior to the game and not when play has already started. Then again, there are just some unforeseen events that call for this kind of interference from peripheral game figures.

That dude who checked the balance of the rim definitely got his 15 minutes, and he would probably tell his grandkids the story of that one day in his life that he wore a cape and single-handedly saved an NBA game from suspension.

And while the good people of Toronto did not shell out money for their seats only to see something like this unfold it seemed as though they were generally okay with it based on their reactions. It bought them some time to buy a beer, go to a restroom, or wonder whether this is the year that the Raptors are going to win the Eastern Conference title for the first time ever.
