At first, it seemed that Griffin tried to evade the upcoming contact from Monk. But after several replays, it showed that Griffin had malicious intentions.

Prior to committing the flagrant foul, Griffin already had a technical foul early in the game as he was frustrated with the no-calls by the referees. He left the game with 7:06 remaining and finished with 10 points, six rebounds, and five assists.

The Pistons ultimately lost, 113-103. Kemba Walker and Tony Parker chipped in 24 points apiece to carry the Hornets to victory. For the Pistons, Andre Drummond and Reggie Bullock carried the load with 23 points each. Reggie Jackson added 19 points and seven assists.

After the game, Pistons head coach Dwane Casey defended Griffin's actions, noting that he was frustrated all game long. Per Vince Ellis of the Detroit Free Press:

“He's getting hit on a lot of shots,” Casey said. “That frustration builds up and he's had a lot of load on him. Bringing the ball up the floor, handling the basketball, being a point forward and then going down in the paint and battling down there.”

Casey acknowledged that the referees aren't going to adjust the calls but he still pointed out that Griffin was getting fouled:

“Officials are not going to change the way they're calling it so we have to adjust, but I do think he's getting banged and hit down there.”
