Could Everson Griffen really leave the Minnesota Vikings in free agency?

Griffen voided his contract with the club earlier this offseason, but the general expectation was that the defensive lineman would re-sign with the Vikings on a cheaper deal.

But that may not be the case.

Ben Goessling of The Minneapolis Star-Tribune isn't so sure that Griffin will link back up with Minnesota, saying that he will “at least explore his other options elsewhere” and mentions that the Seattle Seahawks could represent a potential destination.

While Griffen's best days may be behind him, he is coming off of a solid 2019-20 campaign in which he played 15 games and registered 41 tackles, eight sacks and an interception en route to a Pro Bowl appearance.

The 32-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the University of Southern California, was originally selected by the Vikings in the fourth round (100th pick overall) of the 2010 NFL Draft.

Griffen didn't really begin to flash signs of brilliance until his third season, when he recorded 27 tackles and eight sacks. Then, after a shaky 2013 season, Griffen broke out in 2014, racking up 58 tackles and 12 sacks. However, he did not make his first Pro Bowl until 2015, when he finished with 44 tackles and 10.5 sacks.

Overall, he has earned four Pro Bowl selections, although his level of play has clearly dropped off in recent years, as he has only logged one double-digit sack campaign since 2016.

Minnesota won 10 games and nabbed a Wild Card berth this past year. The Vikings then went on to upset the New Orleans Saints in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs before falling to the San Francisco 49ers in the Divisional Round.
