Minnesota Vikings cornerback Mackensie Alexander will not play in his team's Divisional Round playoff matchup with the San Francisco 49ers on Saturday as a result of undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery for a small tear in his lateral meniscus, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

Pelissero notes that Alexander's season is not necessarily over if the Vikings advance.

Alexander did not play during Minnesota's Wild Card Round win over the New Orleans Saints this past weekend.

In the 13 games he played during the regular season, Alexander registered 37 tackles, an interception, a fumble recovery and five passes defended.

The 26-year-old, who played his collegiate football at Clemson, was originally selected by the Vikings in the second round (54th pick overall) of the 2016 NFL Draft.

He appeared in 13 contests during his rookie campaign and had a very limited role, logging just five tackles. The following year, Alexander participated in 14 games, finishing with 17 tackles, a pick and six passes defended.

Mackensie Alexander's role then grew significantly in 2018 as part of a breakout year of sorts, playing in 15 games with six starts and totaling 43 tackles, four sacks and 10 passes defended.

The Vikings won 10 games during the regular season, securing a Wild Card berth in the NFC. They then went on to upset the heavily favored Saints in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs, coming away with a 26-20 overtime victory.

Minnesota will once again be the underdog as it heads on the road to battle the 49ers in The Bay.

The Vikings are looking to make it back to the NFC Championship Game for the second time in three years.
