Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer said defensive end Everson Griffen won't travel with the team or play in Thursday night's game against the Los Angeles Rams as he works on fixing his mental health issues, according to Chris Tomasson of the Pioneer Press. Zimmer said Griffen has also been dealing with a knee injury that has kept him off the field.

There has been a lot of attention on Griffen's mental health over the last several days as he was allegedly involved in a serious situation at a hotel that has many with the team concerned about his well being. Zimmer discussed the matter Tuesday, stressing that this issue is much bigger than the game of football, according to ESPN's Courtney Cronin.

“The only thing I'm really concerned about for Everson isn't anything to do with football; it's about him getting better. In the five years that I've been here, I've always loved Everson — the effort that he puts out, the work that he does, the chance to count on him in game time, and even in practice. He's always been a really, really good model for us, and obviously he's going through some tough times now.”

Police have released another report about Griffen's situation. After the alleged hotel incident, the Vikings requested that police check on Griffen's wife and kids. Police got in touch with Griffen's wife, Tiffany, and she revealed that the defensive end “has not been acting normal lately.” This was corroborated by a member of the Vikings.

Police then made contact with Vikings Director of Player Development Les Pico who said Griffen “has really been struggling for the past few weeks.” Pico said during practice in the past week, Everson “has been explosive, screaming and yelling in the workplace.” Pico said that Vikings management sent Griffen and his agent a letter on Thursday, Sept. 20 stating he is not allowed back until he has a mental health evaluation.

Griffen ultimately agreed to be evaluated at a hospital located in Minnesota in order to help him get through this entire ordeal. He is clearly going through something that has pushed him to this point.

This is an ongoing situation for Griffen that the team will monitor moving forward due to the seriousness of the matter. There is no timetable for Griffen's return, but there should be plenty more information to come over the next several days as he gets checked out medically.
