The restrictions placed in response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic have presented its own set of challenges for teams trying to negotiate long-term deals this offseason. However, it seems the Minnesota Vikings finally managed to get it done for head coach Mike Zimmer.

According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, the Vikings have signed Zimmer to a multi-year extension:

The Vikings are finalizing a multi-year contract extension with coach Mike Zimmer, per sources.

Zimmer was entering the final year of his current deal after coaching the Vikings to a 59-41-1 record during his first six seasons with the team.

They have made the playoffs three times during this span, which even included a trip to the NFC Conference Championship in 2017. While they may have been edged out in the NFC North by the Green Bay Packers during the 2019 campaign, they were able to pull off quite an upset over the New Orleans Saints in the NFC Wild Card.

Although Zimmer has established himself as the third-winningest coach in franchise history, rumors started to swirl regarding a potential trade to the Dallas Cowboys. Fortunately, Minnesota has dispelled this notion by doubling down on him as their coach for the long haul.

With training camp scheduled to begin in the coming weeks, Zimmer can now focus on maintaining the high expectations that have been set for the Vikings since his arrival.

The onus will fall on him to ensure that this team proves capable of getting over that playoff hump as bonafide Super Bowl contenders.
