The Minnesota Vikings have locked up one of their rising young stars to a long-term deal. They have agreed to terms with defensive end Danielle Hunter on a five-year extension worth $72 million with $40 million guaranteed, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

Hunter, 23, was a third-round pick by the Vikings in the 2015 draft. He displayed his effectiveness as a part-time pass rusher as he racked up 18.5 sacks (including 12.5 in 2016) despite starting just one game.

But aside from his gaudy sack numbers, Hunter has also been a highly reliable run stopper on the edge. In 2016, he had the highest run stop percentage in the league among edge defenders, according to Pro Football Focus.

Hunter finally got his chance to start this past season, and he made the most of it. He started all 16 games and racked up seven sacks playing opposite Everson Griffen. Those two formidable pass rushers played a huge part in the Vikingsā€™ terrific defense which helped them reach the NFC Championship Game last year.

It's certainly a big move for the Vikings to lock up one of the most promising young defensive ends in the league for the long-term. But while Hunterā€™s deal is done, the Vikings still have some more work to do this offseason with two other players in need of extensions: linebacker Anthony Barr and wide receiver Stefon Diggs. While Diggs has said heā€™s not focused on his contract yet, Barr recently said regarding his contract talks that itā€™s ā€œon the organizationā€ to get the deal done.
