The Wilf family and the Minnesota Vikings have announced a $5 million donation for social justice causes amid the protests against systemic racism and racial oppression.

Moreover, the Vikings pledged an endowment for the George Floyd Legacy Scholarship “with an establishing gift of $125,000 by the Vikings Social Justice Committee.”

The Vikings now join the Minnesota Lynx and the Minnesota Timberwolves in making use of their influence and financial capacity to help fight social injustice and racism across the United States.

“Our organization and the players have shown a commitment to these causes over the last several years, but we know we need to and can do more,” Vikings owner Zygi Wilf said in their press release. “We want this investment to support the many diverse and meaningful social justice efforts throughout our country, but it can only be one piece of our overall work toward having a sustainable impact. Our actions within our communities will be the driving force for creating profound change.”

Minnesota is the epicenter of the ongoing protests across America. Recently, George Floyd — an unarmed African American man — died at the hands of Minneapolis police after an officer kneeled onto his neck for nearly nine minutes. The incident was caught on camera, and the video spread like wildfire on social media.

People from all walks of life — including celebrities and professional athletes — took the streets to protest the unjust killing and the persistent police brutality against members of the African American community.

Sure enough, the Vikings are doing the right thing by making a stand and showing that they care about the issue. Their donation and scholarship grant will certainly go a long way in ensuring that something will change.

This isn't the first philanthropic move the Wilf family and the Vikings have made this year. Last March, they donated $250,000 to the local community to help fight the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
