Wade Phillips is the envy of every defensive coordinator in the NFL right now. With the Los Angeles Rams pulling off one fantastic transaction after another this offseason, the team has managed to build a defensive unit that, at least on paper, is arguably the best in the league right now.

Perhaps unable to contain his own excitement over the tremendous amount of talent the Rams’ stop unit has acquired of late, Wade Philips just can’t help but break out a pun, per Rich Hammond of the Orange County Register.

Of course, Phillips was referring to the Rams’ adding of Ndamukong Suh to the team. The Rams signed the 31-year-old defensive tackle late last month to a one-year, $14 million contract after Suh, bolstering its defensive line that already boasts of Defensive Player of the Year Aaron Donald. Prior to hooking up with the Rams, Suh was released by the Miami Dolphins.

Suh is not the only head-turning addition to the Rams’ defense this offseason. Los Angeles also strengthened its secondary by trading for cornerbacks Marcus Peters and Aqib Talib. They also signed veteran corner Sam Shields to a one-year deal.

Although the Rams were not able to sustain their surprising regular-season success in 2017 by getting taken out by the Atlanta Falcons in the wild-card round, their defensive improvement under Phillips should not be overlooked. In Phillips’ first year as the Rams’ DC, the team went from 23rd in scoring defense in 2016 to 12th in 2017, when Los Angeles allowed just 20.6 points per game.

Having given an embarrassment of riches in terms of personnel, it’s now up to Phillips how to make the new and improved Rams’ defense work.
