Typically, the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year award goes to a player that comes off the bench and scores a bunch of points. That's why Rockets reserves Lou Williams (averaging 15.2 points) and Eric Gordon (averaging 16.3 points) are the leading candidates for this year's award. But there are other bench players that may not be scoring at a high rate yet are still contributing in a big way for their team.

One such player is Andre Iguodala, whose versatility has been especially key to Golden State's success this season. But despite his value to the Warriors, Iguodala likely won't win the Sixth Man of the Year award. Mainly because Iguodala is only averaging 7.5 points.  However, Iguodala has one of the better plus/minus in the league and his passing ability and defense should make him in the running for the award.

Iguodala though, isn't openly campaigning for the award. But if he wins it, he would appreciate the honor.

From Anthony Slater of the San Jose Mercury News:

“I wouldn’t be pumped,” Iguodala said. “At all. But I’d be like: ‘Oh, that’s cool.’ We’re going to pimp this for free agency. That’s what we going to do. You got to try to take the good out of things. I’m always trying to be devil’s advocate, trying to figure out what’s wrong with it and try to perfect everything that I don’t see the upside. So I think it’s kind of cool, but I won’t be crazy excited.”

Despite Iguodala's reluctance, Warriors coach Steve Kerr is hoping Iguodala wins the Sixth Man of the Award:

“Andre has a lot to do with that,” Kerr said. ” … This guy, he’s phenomenal. People are going to look at the stats and go, well, he’s averaging six, seven points, however many. Then they’re going to find someone who averages 17 and say: ‘I’m going to vote for that guy.’ But those of you with votes, I’ll remind you that this game is about more than just scoring.”

Kerr is campaigning for one of his own players but he is a hundred percent about Iguodala, as he does a lot of the little things that help the Warriors win. Unfortunately though, Iguodala's contributions to the Warriors while great, likely won't earn him the Sixth Man of the Year award. But at the very least, the Warriors appreciate Iguodala's efforts, which could help them win a championship for the the second time in three years.
