The Golden State Warriors acquired Andrew Wiggins from the Minnesota Timberwolves on Thursday in the D'Angelo Russell trade.
Wiggins, the first overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft, hasn't lived up to expectations. While he can no doubt score the ball with the best of them and get to the rim at will with his nuclear athleticism, Wiggins is a negative on defense and doesn't seem to have the motor it takes to become a superstar in the NBA despite having all the talent in the world.
One NBA scout who spoke to Tom Haberstroh of NBC Sports says the new Warriors forward is a “one-way player.”
Andrew Wiggins has carried a reputation that he doesn’t put in enough effort defensively, but maybe the numbers were missing something. I asked a longtime NBA scout for his opinion on Wiggins’ defensive play. The response: “Poor. One-way player.”
Wiggins is averaging 22.4 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.7 assists this season. The 24-year-old is shooting 44.4 percent from the field, 33.1 percent from beyond the arc and 72.0 percent from the free-throw line.
The newest Warrior has one of the worst contracts in the NBA. He's making $27.5 million this season and owed $29.5 million in 2020-21.
Warriors fans are definitely curious and anxious to see how Wiggins looks next season alongside Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green. As for this season, the swingman will get to take as many shots as he wants for the Dubs in a lost season for Steve Kerr's group.
