All-Star guard D'Angelo Russell has matured a lot since his time with the Los Angeles Lakers, and Golden State Warriors general manager Bob Myers can attest to that.

Russell, the second overall pick of the 2015 NBA Draft, was dubbed as a bust and a snitch during his time in Los Angeles. He was eventually traded to the Brooklyn Nets after his second year, with then Lakers president Magic Johnson saying that what he needs is a leader — a clear shot at the then 21 year-old playmaker.

In just two years, however, D'Lo was able to turn his career around. He became an All-Star with the Brooklyn Nets last season and established himself as a leader, far from the immature kid in LA who was still learning the inner workings of the NBA.

Myers learned it firsthand how Russell has changed over the years, and in his recent appearance at The TK Show Podcast, he discussed how D'Lo grew and mature as a player.

“He said, ‘In hindsight, maybe I wasn't ready for what was coming in L.A. with being the No. 2 pick.' A lot of people would blame everybody else and say it wasn't my fault, which I think showed a maturity,” Myers said of Russell, via Dalton Johnson of NBS Sports Bay Area.

Myers also lauded Russell's hard work to rejuvenate his career, especially since he's still a very young player who had to deal with criticisms and an ugly trade.

“For a guy that's pretty new in the league, he's been through more than most I'd say. Being a high pick, going to the Lakers, getting moved, going to Brooklyn … the way he handled that, helping them ascend, kind of coming into his own,” Myers furthered.

Russell's move to the Warriors not only lessened the impact of Kevin Durant's departure, but it also gave the Dubs a top-tier player who will share the minutes with Stephen Curry in the backcourt as they await the return of Klay Thompson. Most importantly though, Golden State also got a player who they can trust to lead the team when the going gets tough.

“I'm happier now than I was even when we did it, knowing more about who he actually is,” Myers said.
