D'Angelo Russell and Karl-Anthony Towns are close friends, so much so that there was rampant speculation that Russell was going to join the Minnesota Timberwolves in free agency over the summer.

Of course, Russell ultimately linked up with the Golden State Warriors in a sign-and-trade deal, and on Friday night, Russell's Warriors will face Towns' Timberwolves.

As for their friendship? That all goes out the window for this meeting, as Russell said “I don't know that guy today,” according to Logan Murdock of NBC Sports Bay Area.

Harsh, but good to see the competitive spirit.

Russell has missed the last three games with an ankle injury, but it seems like he'll be good to go against Minnesota. In the five games he has played this season, Russell has struggled, averaging 19.0 points, 6.4 assists and 3.2 rebounds over 30.4 minutes per game while shooting just 38.6 percent from the floor, 31.4 percent from 3-point range and 71.4 percent from the free-throw line.

The 23-year-old, who played his collegiate basketball at Ohio State, was originally selected by the Los Angeles Lakers with the second overall pick of the 2015 NBA Draft.

He spent the first two seasons of his career with the Lakers, posting mostly disappointing results before being traded to the Brooklyn Nets during the summer of 2017.

D'Angelo Russell's first year with the Nets was plagued by injuries, as he appeared in just 48 contests, but last season, he had a breakout year of sorts. The guard registered 21.1 points, 7.0 assists and 3.9 boards across 30.2 minutes a night while making 43.4 percent of his field goal attempts, 36.9 percent of his long-distance tries and 78.0 percent of his foul shots.
