D'Angelo Russell expressed hope of playing with two of his best friends on the same team one day. The former No. 2 overall pick is hoping to team up with draftmates Karl-Anthony Towns of the Minnesota Timberwolves and Devin Booker of the Phoenix Suns, two of his closest friends in the league after spending much of their youth together while playing AAU:

“We gotta do this again, when we’re all on the same team,” Russell joked at the end of a photoshoot along his two friends for SLAM Magazine, according to Max Resetar of the same publication. “Nah, don’t cut it,” Russell said to our rolling cameras. “Y’all got it on footage. When we’re all on the same team — I ain’t gonna tell you which team because I don’t know — we’re gonna do this again.”

Towns, Booker, and Russell all posed together for a vintage-type photoshoot for the cover of the magazine, donning the retro jerseys of Kevin Garnett, Charles Barkley, and Tim Hardaway, respectively:

The three players have a closely-knit friendship, one that could turn into the next era's Miami Heat, lining up three superstar-caliber players under one roof. The era of player empowerment has certainly allowed avenues for which that can happen.

Karl-Anthony Towns and Devin Booker signed five-year extensions last summer, while D'Angelo Russell inked a four-year, $137 million contract this summer, allowing the first two members of the class of 2015 to become free agents in 2024 and Russell to become one a year earlier.

All three players are now 20-point scorers, perhaps becoming a trio to watch out for once their deals come close to expiring.
