SAN FRANCISCO — The Golden State Warriors are 6-1 to begin the 2021-22 NBA season. It's a surprise to some but not to the team. Another thing that isn't a surprise is the squad having the number one defense in the league.

Draymond Green, the 2017 Defensive Player of the Year, revealed to the media that assistant coach Mike Brown is one of the reasons why the Dubs have turned it up a notch on defense this season. Green said Brown created a system that highlights players defensively.

“Every game, there's a defensive player of the game, there's a defensive player of the week…All these things and number one, it's making it fun and competitive. I think that's incredible,” Green told ClutchPoints.

Creating a game inside another game is well and good, but the players still have to do their part on the floor. The Warriors are a veteran group, so they understand what needs to get done, and they go out and do it. It's a combination of effort and IQ that makes this team so good on the defensive side of the ball. It also helps to have difference-making defenders like Green, Andre Iguodala and Gary Payton II on the same team.

“But we also understand that when we're defending and we can get out in transition with the shooting we have, with all the playmakers that we have, you don't want to be playing against a set defense every time up. You can find the best offense in the NBA with the best players in the NBA if you're playing against a set defense every time it's tough,” Green explained.

The Warriors play the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday night. They hope to continue their defensive dominance and leave the game with another win under their belt.
