Golden State Warriors power forward Draymond Green says his new $100 million contract proves those who thought he wouldn't make it in the NBA were wrong.
Green was a second round pick back in the 2012 NBA Draft. However, he turned himself into an All-Star player and won three championships with the Warriors. Now, the former Defensive Player of the Year is enjoying making his critics eat their words.
For Green, the contract is a statement against the “garbage” surrounding him and the Warriors last season and proves that those who thought he wouldn't make it in the NBA were wrong, calling that fact “very sweet.”
“It just tells you that there was a method to that madness,” Green told Nichols. “And while so many people tried to write it differently, as I said before, they were wrong. There's proof in the pudding now that you were wrong. And I enjoy that just a tad.”
He also said he didn't want to wait until he became a free agent next season, saying he could “come up short” on a megadeal and would never want to bail on the Warriors.
Draymond Green will make $18.5 million next season. His new contracts kicks in during the 2020-21 season.
A three-time All-Star, Green averaged 7.4 points, 7.3 rebounds and 6.9 assists for the Warriors last season while shooting 44.5 percent from the field and 69.2 percent from the free-throw line.
The Warriors have $129 million and $138 million committed to their four max players of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and D’Angelo Russell for the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons, respectively.
