Team defense has kept the Golden State Warriors competitive this season. With the recent signing of Gary Payton II, son of Hall of Famer Gary Payton, the Dubs hope to gain some consistency at the defensive end of the floor. Payton was the G League Defensive Player of the Year, and he's ready for his new opportunity in the Bay Area. Payton II told ClutchPoints what he said in his first conversation about rotations with his new head coach, Steve Kerr.

“I told him, you know why I'm here. I'm not afraid to guard anybody on the other team at all,” Payton said.

There is a lot of young talent at the guard position on this Warriors squad, so playing time is hardly guaranteed for the man who watched NBA great and Seattle Sonics legend Gary Payton become a famously tenacious defensive force with a knack for taking the ball away. The younger Payton, trying to follow in the footsteps of “The Glove,” plans to stay ready whenever coach Kerr calls his number.

“I know he's going to throw me in when he can. Then I'll do what I do. He said to be aggressive and take open shots. I think we're on the same page, and he knows what I'm here for to guard the best person, so I think we had had a nice little conversation,” Payton told ClutchPoints about Kerr and his future with the Warriors.

Payton is looking for a place to call home. Being on a 10-day contract with the Warriors means the pressure is on immediately, and with his minutes potentially being limited, every possession will count for Payton.

The Dubs play the Washington Wizards at the Chase Center on Friday, marking the first time Payton will be available for the Warriors this season.
