Game 1 of the 2018 NBA Finals between the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Golden State Warriors ended in a controversial manner, but it also started inauspiciously for the defending champions. During the early minutes of the contest, Warriors shooting guard Klay Thompson hurt himself after getting inadvertently undercut by Cavs guard J.R. Smith in the first quarter.

Thompson headed to the locker room afterwards and spent some time there before getting back to the bench and eventually returning to action.

Initially, it was reported by ABC’s broadcast that Thompson sustained a left lateral leg contusion. The Warriors would later make it clear that the sharpshooter’s injury was closer to his ankle than his knee, per Anthony Slater of The Athletic.

If there were any concerns about Thompson’s health, he immediately extinguished them with his performance in Game 1, finishing with 24 points on 8-for-16 shooting from the field with five 3-pointers, three rebounds, and an assist in 45 minutes on the court to help lift Golden State to a 124-114 overtime win.

Klay Thompson is expected to play this Sunday at home for Game 2 of the series. He is averaging 20.7 points on 46.4 percent shooting from the field in the playoffs as an integral part of the Warriors.
