The Golden State Warriors were among the unlikely winners of last week’s NBA Draft in Brooklyn. Even though they were picking late in the first round, the Warriors somehow managed to get one player many think is a sleeper who would easily align himself with the team’s system. That’s Jacob Evans, who ironically used to be not one of the Warriors’ biggest fans.

In fact, Evans once bemoaned on Twitter Kevin Durant’s move to Golden State, back when he just finished his first year in Cincinnati. Some years later, he found himself on the same team with Durant. Crazy how things have worked out for Evans.

During Evans’ introductory presser to the media, however, he tried to clarify the matter, stating that he was not entirely an anti-Warriors fan like some would have labeled him based on his tweet from two years ago, per Anthony Slate of The Athletic.

“Well … I never rooted against the Warriors,” Evans retorted at his introductory press conference on Monday. “I respect greatness.”

It’s a safe and fair thing for Evans to say. Lamenting Durant’s transfer to an already stacked Warriors lineup is clearly different from rooting against Golden State. There’s no loophole in what Evans said.

Durant, however, could still make Jacob Evans pay for what he tweeted by letting the rookie carry his belongings as part of a season-long rookie initiation.

In three seasons with the Cincinnati Bearcats, the 6-foot-6 Evans averaged 11.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game.
