Golden State Warriors rookie Jordan Poole never expected to be wearing blue and gold to begin his career, thinking he'd be snatched by the San Antonio Spurs right before the end of the first round of the NBA Draft.

“I was really preparing for 29,” Poole told Anthony Slater of The Athletic.

While most believed Poole could have been gotten at the middle of the second round, while some others had the Michigan guard going undrafted, the Warriors thought they stole him at draft night, picking him one selection ahead of the Spurs, who had worked him out and loved his shooting ability.

The young shooting guard is averaging 19.7 points in the Las Vegas Summer League and recently dropped 23 points in an 88-80 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday.

Poole's got a sexy-looking trigger and he's not shy to pull it — exactly the quality that this front office has looked for in a player after getting this concept through the likes of Patrick McCaw and Jordan Bell in the recent past.

The Warriors are going for a bold and new roster, getting considerably younger and re-tooling instead of rebuilding, as their three stars in Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green are approaching their early 30s.

Poole was aware he had interest from teams around the league. The Warriors, who were his first and last workout of the pre-draft experience, were one of those teams.

“Going into my first workout, I knew that they really, really liked me,” said Poole. “They were asking one of my coaches a lot of questions about me. Then when they brought me back for a second workout, that’s when I really knew they were extremely interested.

“It was just a matter if I could show them whether I could guard in that second workout.”

Poole's confidence was one of the main attractions to his game, and that showed with his mindset. The 6-foot-5 shooting guard was slated to go in the 40s, some others had him not getting his name called at all.

“I came into the entire draft process thinking first round. I didn’t think otherwise,” said the rookie. “First round. First round. First round. That’s all I was thinking in workouts.

“You got people who make the mock drafts, what intel do they really know? They’re not in these workouts. You can only accumulate the knowledge that you have from other social media outlets. So I’m like, OK, if you don’t have me on the board, you don’t. But you’re not in the workouts. I was able to prove myself in workouts.”

Like many others, Poole was able to impress in workouts and ultimately nail a guaranteed contract after being selected in the first round, now wearing a very different uniform than the one he thought he'd don throughout his first season in the league.
