Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook became part of a lot of headlines once again following their war of words during the game between the Golden State Warriors and Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday. The two trash-talked each other, and at one point even came face-to-face and had to be separated by their teammates.

After the game though, the Warriors star forward said that it was only brought out by their competitiveness, and that it’s not personal. He even mentioned that he has “nothing but love” for Westbrook, which his mother, Wanda, believes as well. She then claimed, via Chris Haynes of ESPN, that the media has placed too much hype on them, causing their on-court beef to be overblown.

“I just think it’s a lot of unnecessary hype around all of this really. It’s just a game. It’s basketball. So, I don’t know. I’ll be glad when it’s over because it’s really unnecessary. It’s unfortunate, but it is what it is.”

The eight-time All-Star forward echoed his mom’s statement, saying that it’s about the Warriors and Thunder, and not him and Westbrook.

“It’s not about me and Russ. It’s about the Thunder and the Warriors. Myself and Russ are competing out there. That’s part of the game. It’s basketball. It’s not about us. We’re just playing the game, and trash talking is part of it. That’s all it is.”

Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook were teammates with the Thunder for eight seasons, before the reigning Finals MVP decided to take his talents to Oakland, and join the Warriors last year. That formed a rivalry between the two stars, who figured in fiery matchups last season.

With Westbrook having two new All-Star teammates this year in Paul George and Carmelo Anthony, the Thunder strengthened their bid for the title.

Should they meet beyond the regular season, it can be expected that Durant and Westbrook will both be fired up for the matchup, and could have more heated moments.
