Russell Westbrook’s 2016-17 season was truly one for the ages. The Oklahoma City Thunder star led the league in scoring while becoming the first player since Oscar Robertson to average a triple-double for the entire season. Thanks to that epic season, he was able to land the MVP award.
Westbrook was never realistically going to be able to come close to matching that type of season again, especially with new teammates in Paul George and Carmelo Anthony eating away at his stats. But Golden State Warriors star Kevin Durant feels his former Thunder teammate is still having one hell of a season despite the expected dip in his numbers.
It’s hard to argue with Durant that someone averaging a near triple-double of 20.1 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 9.7 assists like Westbrook is currently doing is still doing pretty well. Although, Westbrook’s sub-40 percent field goal percentage, including 35 percent in November, has to be somewhat concerning, even though it’s obviously still early in the season.
Nevertheless, it should be a credit to Westbrook that he’s normalized producing such insane statistics to the point where his otherwise remarkable season is being somewhat overlooked. And it’s also a credit to Durant that he still has his old teammate’s back and points out how good he still is.
