While most NBA players put a premium on working hard and putting a lot of hours inside the gym as the secret to making them reach their full potential as professional athletes, there are also some new practices being done by others outside of the norm.

Players try yoga, meditation, and even taking on another sport to help them play better basketball — but for Klay Thompson, he thinks something else did the trick during the offseason to get him more prepared for this year’s grind.

The Golden State Warriors star guard admitted recently, via Mark Medina of The Mercury News, that he believes having spent time daily on the beach made his lifestyle more active. He even said that he’s serious about it, and owes his preparation to how much fun he’s had on the shores.

“I came into the season in great shape,” Thompson said. “The active lifestyle got me ready for the long haul of the 82-game schedule.”

“I was at the beach all the time. When I’m at the beach, I have an active lifestyle. I was having fun. That’s what I was doing. Definitely the beach really helped. I’m not even kidding.”

His current form definitely shows how prepared he was coming into the season. Through seven games so far, Thompson is averaging impressive numbers of 21.9 points (including a career-high 44.8 percent from beyond the arc), to go along with 4.0 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.1 blocks in 35 minutes per game.

Should he be able to play at this level throughout the campaign, he will prove that the beach is indeed the secret to his success this year. Not only will it be a huge boost to the Dubs in defending their title, but it could also lead other players to also head to the beach often, and share the active lifestyle Thompson has been proudly talking about.
