Entering Wednesday, Golden State Warriors shooting guard Klay Thompson is shooting 70.6 percent on layups, which ranks No. 1 in the NBA for guards and No. 2 overall among all players.

Klay Thompson is one of the best 3-point shooters in NBA history, but he's showing this year that he is much more than just a perimeter shooter.

Perhaps the most surprising statistic from this season is that Thompson is also shooting 77-of-109 (70.6 percent) on layups. Only big man Domantas Sabonis (minimum: 100 attempts) has been more accurate on this shot type.

Thompson is shooting 88-of-122 (72.1 percent) on shots within the restricted area. This ranks No. 2 overall out of all NBA guards who have taken at least 100 per game in this zone, trailing just Milwaukee’s Eric Bledsoe.

Layups aren't always the easiest shots. Usually, you have to be able to finish in heavy traffic, as there are always rim protectors at the basket trying to stop you. Thompson has worked on his finishing ability since he came into the NBA, and the hard work is paying off in a big way for the sharpshooter.

In 47 games for the Warriors this year, Thompson is averaging 22.2 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2.0 assists. The four-time All-Star is shooting 46.4 percent from the field, 38.2 percent from beyond the arc and 80.7 percent from the free-throw line.
