Klay Thompson's future, at least when it comes to putting pen to paper, remains unknown. Considering this latest development, it seems even more likely than ever that he'll re-sign with the Golden State Warriors when free agency officially opens on Sunday evening.
According to Marcus Thompson of The Athletic, Thompson will join in on the Warriors' meeting with Kevin Durant next week via FaceTime.
The Athletic previously reported on Saturday that Stephen Curry will be part of the Golden State contingent recruiting Durant, a group headlined by general manager Bob Myers. Draymond Green has reportedly already visited the two-time Finals MVP in New York City since the season ended two weeks ago.
Thompson is a free agent this summer. While there's some debate in league circles about whether he's worth a five-year, $190 million maximum contract, it's always been assumed that he would re-sign with the Warriors regardless. The most recent reporting indicates that Golden State will offer him the max at the start of free agency on Sunday, ensuring he doesn't get the chance to speak with other interested suitors – including the LA Clippers and Los Angeles Lakers.
Thompson tore his ACL in the third quarter of Game 6 of the NBA Finals, both leaving short-handed Golden State without the fire power needed to stave off elimination by the Toronto Raptors and putting his status for 2019-20 in doubt. Myers said earlier this week that Thompson would have surgery in the coming days.
Durant, who underwent surgery to repair a ruptured Achilles tendon during the Finals, is also considering the Brooklyn Nets, LA Clippers, and New York Knicks in free agency.
