The offseason has been a time to put in work for second-year big man Omari Spellman, who claims he has dropped 40 pounds since Summer League, down from the 315 pounds he weighed to 275, according to Anthony Slater of The Athletic.

Spellman was acquired by the Golden State Warriors in a trade that shipped out Damian Jones to the Atlanta Hawks, as the finalists opted to give a younger, more skilled player a chance to bounce back from a season plagued by injuries.

This could be a gut check for Spellman, who might just have a direct line to minutes at center after potential starter Willie Cauley-Stein suffered an injury and is now bound to miss the entire preseason, virtually handing Kevon Looney the starting gig. The 22-year-old could be in line for backup minutes under Looney to give the Warriors a very different presence if he's able to stretch the floor.

As a rookie out of Villanova, Spellman wasn't the most accurate from the floor, though he did can 44 treys in 46 games for the Hawks, 11 of which he started before John Collins returned from an offseason injury.

The upside is high for the second-year big man, considering he wants to drop to 265 pounds before getting into the regular season, at which point he might drop even more weight naturally. The 6-foot-9 big man was listed at 245 pounds during his rookie year, but he has had his share of weight struggles through the course of his career, dating back to high school and college.
