Most casual basketball fans — especially those that do not follow the EuroLeague — will be unfamiliar with the name Juan Carlos Navarro. The Google and YouTube searches of the Spanish legend will certainly shoot up in the coming days, though, after none other than Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry named Navarro as one of the players he tries to emulate.

In a recent interview during the build-up to the much anticipated NBA All-Star Game, Curry was asked about why he believes some people compare him to Navarro. The former back-to-back MVP clearly held the retired EuroLeague legend in high regard as Curry admitted that he's tried to copy some of Navarro's moves:

“I played against him one time in international basketball and seen a lot of film,” Curry said Sunday to reporters, via Dalton Johnson of NBC Sports. “His creativity, his shot selection, his rhythm on the floor — it jumps off the screen when you play against him. I've seen him take the one-footed 3s and the way he moved all around the floor, I learned a little of what I could implement into my game. I've tried the one-foot 3s a couple time, made a couple.

“Definitely some inspiration there, and any guy you can kind of see yourself in when you're out there on the floor you obviously pay attention to and there's an opportunity every time to expand your skill set by what you see other guys do. Definitely he's been on my radar for sure.”

Unfortunately, unlike Curry, Navarro's career in the NBA did not really pan out. He was drafted by the Washington Wizards in 2002, but it wasn't until five years later that the sharp-shooting two-guard made his NBA debut for the Memphis Grizzlies. His stint in the NBA lasted just one season, averaging 10.9 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists, while also connecting on 1.9 triples per game.

Despite his unsuccessful career in the NBA, however, Navarro is widely considered an icon in the EuroLeague. The fact that Stephen Curry, one of, if not the greatest shooters of all time, has high praise for him speaks volumes of how much of an impact Navarro has had in the game of basketball.
