Kevin Durant's Achilles injury was a devastating blow for the Golden State Warriors at the biggest stage of their 2018-19 season, yet even more of a disappointment for Durant himself, who had been out for more than a month with a strained calf injury. Stephen Curry was mortified as Durant was the latest in the pile of bodies that kept falling, but he managed to comfort his co-star with some words of affirmation as the two met in the tunnel:

“I don't know why I ran into the tunnel, I think I knew it was something serious,” Curry said in the final episode of his Facebook Watch series Stephen vs. The Game, per Eric Ting of the San Francisco Chronicle. “I threw a Bible verse at him just to encourage him, to keep his spirits high.”

Curry did not specify which Bible verse he used, but did commend Durant for “sacrificing” his body for the Warriors.

Prior to Durant's Game 5 season-ending Achilles injury, Curry had watched Klay Thompson, Andre Iguodala, Kevon Looney, and DeMarcus Cousins go down to injuries throughout their run, making Durant's injury a rock salt rubbed in the wound:

“Klay [Thompson] played on half a hamstring for three games, Andre [Iguodala] was on one leg for almost the entire series, [Kevon] Looney is playing with a broken bone in his chest,” Curry said of the Warriors' injuries during the postseason. “KD sacrificing his body as well, even DeMarcus [Cousins] coming back from his quad injury to play in the Finals. For us to get where we did — one possession to get to a Game 7 – is pretty remarkable.”

Curry relied on his faith to comfort a teammate in a time of need, even as his own playoff chances continued to get slimmer. Yet that level of support is what has made him the ultimate team player, worrying about the health of others before his own.
