With the expansion and power that social media offers, personalities like Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry now have a massive platform to share their thoughts on several issues.

While many in society still look down on athletes who mix sports with politics, the two-time NBA Most Valuable Player feels that it’s a responsibility to speak up when everybody else chooses to be quiet.

In an interview with Dan Roan of BBC Sports, he shares this profound quote:

“If I say something, I can tweet it out and the whole world can read it. You can own that, more so than generations of the past where maybe you had to go through different channels,” said Curry. “So there’s more eyeballs and ears around what we have to say, and we have an opportunity and a platform to speak for those who can’t speak for themselves.”

The height of divisiveness is arguably at an all-time high, not only in the United States but also all over the globe. Curry is right in saying that we need to utilize this medium for good – to share our thoughts on social issues, be more informed, and be the voice that pushes for change.

At the end of the day, we’re humans first before a particular profession or political alignment and we all have the right to our own opinions. Those like Steph, LeBron James, and Colin Kaepernick – who all have strong followings – understand this reality and will undoubtedly do what they can to help the world.

After much criticism, though, it doesn’t seem like they’re planning to keep quiet – and this is definitely a good thing.
