Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr acknowledged on Wednesday that losing forward/center Kevon Looney in free agency would've been a serious blow to the team.

During an appearance on The Warriors Insider Podcast, Kerr was complimentary of the four-year veteran and even referred to him as one of the team's best players.

“That was a huge signing for us,” Golden State head coach Steve Kerr said of Looney. “Had we lost Kevon, we would've been in big trouble because — I said it late last year — he's become one of our foundational pieces. I look at Kevon, with all of our departures, he's now one of our best players and one of the guys that we're really going to count on from night tonight.”

Looney has spent all four years of his NBA career with the Warriors. Every year, he has taken a small step forward and improved his game. Last year with the Dubs, Looney had career highs in nearly every category, averaging 6.3 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.5 assists while shooting 62.5 percent from the field.

The UCLA product is known for his toughness on the court and his rebounding tenacity. While he never developed a consistent jump shot, Looney is an excellent finisher at the rim and frequently finishes lobs from Draymond Green and Stephen Curry.

Kerr will need Looney to take another step next season for the Warriors to be contenders. The team will be without Klay Thompson for most, if not all of the season, and additional production from Looney will be important for Golden Stae to stay in the postseason hunt.
