New York Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau coached Golden State Warriors small forward Andrew Wiggins on the Minnesota Timberwolves, so Warriors head coach Steve Kerr connected with Thibodeau to get a better understanding of what Wiggins is like after the Dubs acquired the former No. 1 overall pick at the 2020 trade deadline.

In an interview with Marc Berman of the New York Post, Kerr talked about the helpful advice he got from Thibodeau on Wiggins.

“We had just traded for Andrew Wiggins and he was really helpful,’’ Warriors head coach, Steve Kerr, said.

“I had a long conversation with Tom Thibodeau about Andrew Wiggins. He gave me some good advice on ways to connect with Andrew, how much he enjoyed coaching him and why. We’ve gotten to know each other over the years. [Thibodeau has] been very helpful to us.

“He showed some X’s and O’s and went over some actions they ran for [Wiggins]. Some of the things they were trying to do. The thing with Tom is he’s a workaholic, loves the X’s and O’s, loves breaking down film and takes great joy in it. Our staff values his opinion.

“What is apparent is he and Andrew had a great relationship and Andrew said that as well,” the Warriors coach continued. “I know Andrew told me he really enjoyed playing for him and appreciated his commitment. When a coach knows his stuff and gets along with his players, he’s got a great chance to succeed. I think Tom’s got a great shot.”

Wiggins appeared in 12 games for the Warriors after his trade from the Timberwolves. The swingman averaged 19.4 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.6 assists while shooting 45.7 percent from the field, 33.9 percent from beyond the arc and 67.2 percent from the free-throw line.

The Warriors should be playoff contenders next season with Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and Wiggins leading the way. The Dubs also have a top pick in the 2020 draft, so they could add a dynamic young player unless general manager Bob Myers trades the pick for a star.

Wiggins, 25, has career NBA averages of 19.7 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.3 assists with the Timberwolves and Warriors.
