Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr isn't making much of the potential departure of star forward Kevin Durant in the wake of the two-time Finals MVP inking another one-and-one deal this summer.
Rumors of a potential move to the New York Knicks, among other franchises, have been picking up steam after Durant opted to sign on the dotted line of a two-year, $61.5 million contract minutes into the start of free agency.
Yet Kerr won't fret about that situation until the clock calls for it, noting his attention is laser-focused on the season ahead and nothing more.
“You don’t worry about that,” Kerr said, according to Mark Medina of the San Jose Mercury News. “This year is this year. We’ll worry about all that stuff later on when the time comes. This is about this season. We’ll see where it goes.”
Some among Golden State circles are hopeful this was Durant's way to set himself up for a five-year, $221 million extension with the Warriors in 2019, when the cap will see yet another spike. However, there's the speculation that the 2014 NBA MVP could be lining up his next landing spot if he walks away with a three-peat at the end of the 2018-19 season.
Kerr recently netted a contract extension of his own, which will present a different challenge with the addition of the mercurial DeMarcus Cousins, who is still recovering from a season-ending Achilles injury.
The Warriors will ultimately will need to make crunch-time decisions if Durant chooses to bolt for a different franchise, potentially looking to keep the core of Klay Thompson and Draymond Green home due to their impending free-agent contracts.
