Omari Spellman finds himself in a different situation now that the Golden State Warriors traded to get him earlier in the summer. Yet he still finds himself in a big man logjam with Draymond Green, Kevon Looney, and new addition Willie Cauley-Stein already en route to strong minutes. Head coach Steve Kerr, however, thinks Spellman could carve a role with this team.

“Spellman’s got a chance to play a role for us,” Kerr told Anthony Slater of The Athletic. “Talented kid. It’ll be really nice to be able to space the floor with a big. We probably haven’t had that since Mo Speights.”

“Any time you can space a 5-man out at the 3-point line, it really opens up the floor. Omari shoots it well out there. The guy is really, really skilled. He’s still young. It’s a matter of us helping to bring him along, help him become a real pro in his daily routine.”

Spellman has had some weight issues since he was drafted out of Villanova in 2018, playing in only 46 games last season while making 11 starts. Yet the 6-foot-9 big man has shown a decent rebounding instinct and a penchant for shooting the three with ease.

It seems Kerr sees him more as a backup center than a power forward, but regardless of the position, he will have to work on his body arduously through the course of the season to stay ready for the Warriors when his number is called.
