Alex Smith was a feel-good story for the Washington Football Team this season, but it is undetermined if he'll be back in a uniform next season. After not being able to suit up in Washington's playoff loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Smith is going to take some time before making a decision on his future.

Via ESPN's John Keim:

“I had so much fun this year, to be back in the locker room and on the field to play a game I love and to lose yourself in it is one of the great feelings in the world,” Smith said, via ESPN's John Keim. “My wife has been through a lot, my family has been through a lot but that's for another time and place.”

Before the season began, Smith was miraculously cleared to return to football after suffering a gruesome leg injury in 2018. Even though things looked grim for Smith to play in the league again, Smith became an NFL starting quarterback for Washington again this season.

However, after helping Washington clinch a playoff berth in Week 17, Smith was unable to play on Saturday due to a calf ailment. Taylor Heinicke started in place of Smith and did an admirable job, but it wasn't enough in a 31-23 loss. With Washington being eliminated from the postseason, Smith and Washington will now have to make a decision on his return.

Given the remarkable journey that Smith has had, there's no denying the passion he still has for football. But with Washington wanting to find a quarterback of the future, it is not cleaer if Smith will be back in the nation's capital.

Regardless of whether or not Smith is back with Washington, or if he is out of the league, his story will always be remembered in NFL history.
