According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the Washington Football Team have indeed elected to utilize their franchise tag this offseason. Coming as absolutely no surprise, Washington has once again decided to place the team's franchise tag on veteran guard Brandon Scherff.

Washington also used its franchise tag on Scherff last offseason, as the two sides will once again have the opportunity to come to an agreement on a long-term contract ahead of the mid-summer deadline.

The NFC East franchise cannot seem to come to an agreement with the veteran guard on what seems like an annual issue at this point. Despite his continued stellar play, which is obviously why he will remain in the nation's capital for at least one more season, the 29-year-old Brandon Scherff will continue to play on a one-year contract (sort of) with Washington for the third straight season.

After originally selecting him with the No. 5 overall pick in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft out of Iowa, Washington then picked up Scherff's fifth-year option on his rookie deal after he played out the first four years of his initial  contract. Washington then used its franchise tag in order to keep Scherff around last offseason.

Although these decisions have kept Scherff in place for an extra three seasons at the very least, it has definitely cost Washington a few extra dollars along the way as a long-term deal may not seem as likely now — though perhaps the third time's the charm.
