Now that's what you call “veteran savvy.” In the closing seconds of the first half of the Monday NFL matchup between the Washington Football Team and the Pittsburgh Steelers, Washington quarterback Alex Smith looked like he was sacked at the worst possible time.
Down 14-0 and leading his team downfield on the final drive of the second quarter, Alex Smith was sacked on third down on the Pittsburgh 32-yard line with about 14 seconds remaining and Washington out of timeouts.
Chaos ensued as kicker Dustin Hopkins and the field goal unit rushed onto the field, and it didn't look like Washington would be able to get the snap off in time — or, at the very least, be stuck with a hurried 49-yard attempt.
However, Alex Smith pulled out an undeniably nifty trick in order to salvage the drive and get Washington a brief stoppage to set up the field goal.
Instead of pulling a Larry Fitzgerald and smartly spotting the ball for the next snap, Alex Smith grabbed the pigskin and jogged towards the sidelines, causing an “administrative issue” that forced the officials to stop the game clock.

You can check out Alex Smith's sneaky move here:

Hopkins sank the field goal, and thanks to Alex Smith, Washington closed Pittsburgh's lead to 14-3 at halftime. Washington has since closed the gap to 14-10.
At time of writing, Alex Smith — in his fifth appearance of the 2020 season — has completed 21 of 31 passes for 199 yards.
On the other side of the ball, fellow Comeback Player of the Year candidate Ben Roethlisberger completed 19 of 27 passes for 198 yards and two touchdowns in the first half.
Alex Smith is trying to guide Washington to the first win for an NFL team against the Steelers this season. Pittsburgh is the only unbeaten team left in the NFL, one game ahead of the Kansas City Chiefs for the top seed in the AFC.
