Chicago White Sox veteran pitcher Dallas Keuchel has struggled throughout the 2022 season, prompting the White Sox to make a difficult decision on his future with the team. On Saturday, the White Sox designated the 34-year-old left-hander for assignment, effectively ending his time with the club.

After a week of being DFA'd, the White Sox can either trade Keuchel or place him on outright waivers. If a team picks him up, he'll be added to their 40-man roster.

Danny Mendick has been promoted from Triple-A in a corresponding move following Keuchel's ousting from the 40-man roster.

The emergence of Johnny Cueto as a reliable starter in 2022 has made Keuchel's role with the White Sox far less important. With Lance Lynn nearing a return to the mound following his injury that held him out for the start of the season, the White Sox no longer felt the need to keep Keuchel on the roster, culminating in his DFA on Saturday.

This season, Keuchel has been nothing short of horrendous. Already owning a -1.1 WAR, Keuchel is 2-5 on the year with a 7.88 ERA and just 20 strikeouts across 32.0 innings of work. In fact, he's surrendered more earned runs (28) than he has struck out batters, and he's also walked 20 hitters on the year.

Those numbers simply won't play for an aging lefty who can barely eclipse 90 MPH on his best day, and it seems the White Sox came to the realization that Keuchel's days as an effective starter are behind him. Whether or not another team takes a chance on the bearded veteran remains to be seen, but based on his woes in 2022, it could be a long road back to the big leagues for Keuchel.
