Tony La Russa’s future as manager of the Chicago White Sox has been much in question as of late amid the team’s sluggish start to the 2022 season. Still, he has the full support of Jose Abreu.

Speaking ahead of the White Sox’s road series finale against the Houston Astros on Sunday, Abreu offered his stamp of approval to La Russa as the season heads into the All-Star break.

“He’s the best manager,” Abreu said. “As a person, as a leader, he’s all that you can ask for.

“I’m glad he’s our manager.”

Abreu further added that while it may be easy to pinpoint the blame on the manager for the team’s losing start to the campaign, “they don’t know how we are in the clubhouse.”

The outside calls for La Russa to be relieved as manager of the White Sox have been growing louder and louder as the season has progressed. For one, the reigning AL Central champions have hovered around the .500 mark for much of the year. The last time that they boasted a winning record came when they held a 22-21 standing following their home victory against the Boston Red Sox on May 25.

Questionable managerial decisions continue to also mar La Russa’s run with the team as of late, which includes the highly criticized call to have Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Trea Turner be intentionally walked on a 1-2 count earlier in the month.

For now, the White Sox will have a crucial opportunity to move back to the .500 mark with a win over the Astros on Sunday.
