The Las Vegas Raiders are hoping to have a successful offseason as they prepare to relocate to a new home stadium in 2020. Jon Gruden is entering his third season in his second stint with the Raiders and he needs to start producing results.

This season, the Raiders went 7-9 and were unable to give themselves a chance to make the playoffs. While the offense had its own fair share of struggles, the defense definitely left a lot to be desired in 2019.

More specifically, the secondary needs a decent bit of work for it to become a reliable group. With nearly a month until free agency, Las Vegas is currently projected to have $51.5 million in cap space, according to Spotrac.

Even if the Raiders choose to address the cornerback position in the 2020 NFL Draft, it could be wise to add a proven corner in free agency. In light of that, here is why the Raiders signing Byron Jones would make perfect sense.

Jones would give Las Vegas a reliable man-coverage corner

When Gruden took the Raiders' head coaching job, he hired Paul Guenther to be his defensive coordinator. Dating back to his time as the Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator, Guenther typically prefers to run zone coverage.

However, in his two seasons as Raiders defensive coordinator, the defense hasn't done as well as expected. Due to the underwhelming play from the defense in the last two years, maybe Las Vegas takes a slightly different approach this offseason.

Despite having a zone-heavy scheme, Las Vegas could sign Jones to provide the team with a reliable man-coverage corner. With the Dallas Cowboys, Jones has evolved into one of the best man-to-man corners in the NFL.

Even though Jones doesn't have many interceptions in his box scores, he isn't thrown at much due to his ability to shut down the receiver he's covering. Regardless of what defense they play, the Raiders could definitely use someone like that next season.

Jones would be a much-needed veteran presence at cornerback

Jones is entering his sixth season in the NFL and is turning 28 years old in September. The Connecticut product is still in the prime of his career. But he'd immediately be a much-needed veteran presence for the Raiders at cornerback.

Currently, Las Vegas has Daryl Worley and Trayvon Mullen as their two starting corners. Worley is getting ready to begin his fifth year in the NFL while Mullen is a second-year corner in 2020.

With that in mind, the Raiders don't necessarily have a dependable veteran cornerback on the roster. In the event that Jones signs with Las Vegas, he'd fill a void that currently resides on the team.

Seeing that the Raiders are making the move to Las Vegas, they are going to be expected to be contenders in the near future. Simply put, adding Jones would give the Raiders a better shot at achieving their goal of making the playoffs.
